Version of this project
Ybbs an der Donau Kindergarten expansion uses the latest in sustainable construction materials, with a Sylva™ kit of parts manufactured in the local Stora Enso Sawmill.
The offsite manufacturing of the cross-laminated timber (CLT) used to make the Sylva™ CLT Walls, Floors and Roofs was a key factor in the building's small carbon footprint and rapid installation. The entire project was completed perfectly on schedule in seven months. Production of the CLT generated nine tonnes of greenhouse gases, a mere fraction of the 133 tonnes of CO₂ the trees removed from the atmosphere while growing and will be stored in the walls and floors of the building for many generations to come.
Community
The 2.8 million EUR project is not just an investment in infrastructure but also in the community's future. It aims to provide comprehensive childcare for the next 100 years with a safe and nurturing environment for five groups of children to learn and play.
The municipality of Ybbs actively participated in the implementation of the project through the provincial government's childcare directive. This alignment with governmental policies ensured that the project is beneficial at a local level and contributes to broader regional development goals.
Sustainable sourcing
The wood used in this project is PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified, ensuring that the raw materials come from sustainably managed forests.
Planning and construction
The project was designed by amm zt-gmbh and built by Ing. Pöchhacker GmbH, with support from other regional partners. This collaboration ensured that the project benefited from local knowledge and expertise, further enhancing its sustainability credentials.
Health and wellbeing
One of the key benefits of using wood in construction is its positive impact on indoor air quality. This focus on health and wellbeing is crucial, as it ensures that the kindergarten is not just a place for learning but also a space where children can thrive physically and mentally. Learn more about this in our Health and wellbeing whitepaper, also available in German.
