The Donau Lodge in Ybbs is a sustainable, award-winning hotel featuring cross-laminated timber (CLT).

The Donau Lodge was the first hotel built in Ybbs. It opened in July 2019. Built directly on the Danube, the Donau Lodge enriches the historic centre of Ybbs with its modern mass timber architecture. Built almost exclusively with companies from Ybbs, and using a Sylva™ prefabricated CLT kit of parts, the project was completed perfectly on time.

The hotel has 27 rooms and a seminar room and offers unobstructed views of the Danube-Europe's longest river. It is located within walking distance of the Stora Enso Mill where the mass timber elements were manufactured to build the hotel.

You might notice the CLT still looks fresh and new because it was coated after installation by the main contractor, Pöchhacker, to prevent discolouration from the natural sunlight. As you can see from the photographs taken both when the hotel first opened in 2019 and later in 2022, the CLT still has a soft lightness to the wood, and the level of darkening is minimal.

Today, Stora Enso provides the option to precoat elements as part of their Sylva Protect Service for an even faster installation.

Awards The Donau Lodge was awarded the 2012 Lower Austrian Timber Construction Award in the 'Commercial Building' category, where it was highly commended.
