Version of this project
Welcome to the Damülser Hof - Wellness & Spa, in Vorarlberg, Austria.
The construction of the Damülser Hof - Wellness & Spa, located in Vorarlberg, Austria, is a remarkable example of a sustainable building with Sylva CLT kit of parts. Owned and operated by the Klauser family, this wellness and spa hotel is a haven for relaxation and luxury and also now a showcase of modern sustainable construction thanks to our distribution partner Claus Schwarzmann.
Specifications
One of the standout features of the Damülser Hof is its use of Sylva™ CLT Walls, Floors and Roofs. These prefabricated elements are known throughout Austria and the world for its strength, versatility, and sustainability. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a type of engineered wood that is made by gluing together layers of solid-sawn lumber, each layer oriented perpendicular to the adjacent layers. This cross-grain configuration provides exceptional strength and stability, making it an ideal material for both walls and floors.
Environmental Certification
The Sylva CLT Walls and Floors used in the construction are PEFC certified. The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification. The certification ensures that the timber used in the hotel's construction comes from sustainably managed forests, which helps to protect forest ecosystems and promote biodiversity.
Design and Architecture
The design is a blend of traditional Alpine architecture and modern luxury. The use of natural materials like wood and stone not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the building to blend with the surrounding landscape. The hotel features large panoramic windows that offer breathtaking views of the mountains, allowing guests to feel connected to nature even while indoors.
Construction Process
The construction process was meticulously planned to have a low carbon footprint. Manufacturing of prefabricated Sylva elements generated 29 tonnes of greenhouse gases (CO₂e). Compared to the 420 tonnes of carbon dioxide that the trees removed while they were growing and will store in for the hotel this is a small fraction. Choosing a Sylva CLT kit instead of non-renewables avoided 630 tonnes of greenhouse gases which is one of the reasons Sylva kits are so popular to work with.
The Sylva Walls and Floors were manufactured off-site in Ybbs in Stora Enso's controlled environment, ensuring high quality and precision. Once delivered to the construction site, the elements were installed quickly and efficiently, reducing the overall construction time by 30% compared with conventional concrete.
Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency was a key consideration in the design and construction of the Damülser Hof. The use of CLT provides excellent thermal insulation, reducing the need for artificial heating and cooling. Additionally, the hotel is equipped with state-of-the-art energy-efficient systems, including LED lighting, high-performance windows, and advanced HVAC systems. These features help to reduce the hotel's overall energy consumption and carbon footprint.
Wellness and Spa Facilities
The wellness and spa facilities at the Damülser Hof are designed to provide guests with a luxurious and rejuvenating experience. The spa features a Finnish sauna, an indoor pool, a bio sauna with panoramic views, an aroma steam bath, and various other wellness amenities. The use of natural materials and sustainable construction practices extends to the spa area, creating a serene and natural environment for guests to relax and unwind.
Commitment to Sustainability
The Klauser family's commitment to sustainability goes beyond the construction of the hotel. The Damülser Hof operates with a strong focus on environmental responsibility, implementing various initiatives to reduce waste, conserve water, and promote sustainable tourism. The hotel sources local and organic products for its restaurant, supports local businesses, and encourages guests to explore the surrounding area's natural beauty.
