Welcome to KliniK Hollenburg, an early example of using mass timber in a healthcare facility.

Situated amidst the picturesque vineyards of Hollenburg, a district in southern Krems, Austria, this facility is dedicated to psychiatric rehabilitation. The 73,000 m² plot enjoys a sunny location with views of the Danube. The clinic is one of the first examples of mass timber being used in a clinical setting. Originally built in 2010, there was an extension made with prefabricated Sylva™ elements in 2014. Wood of both visible and non-visible quality was used for the exterior walls, partition walls, and roof construction.

The Sanlas Group, which operates the facility, is headquartered in Graz and was founded in 1992 by Dr. Günter Nebel, a chief physician. The group operates similar centres across Austria.

Construction was managed by Porr Bau GmbH, serving as the design-build contractor. The project involved the timely completion of a 13,300 m² facility consisting of two intersecting U-shaped buildings with multiple storeys, including an underground parking area, within a 13-month construction period.

The clinic’s layout features a central foyer that connects various sections of the building. It includes 100 single and 10 twin rooms distributed across different wards and therapy areas. The facility also encompasses a day clinic and outpatient services. The east wing is designed to house a gym and an adjacent relaxation room.

The ground floor has an on-site kitchen, a restaurant, and a café. Patient rooms are located on the first and second floors, while the third floor will host a health hotel with 17 suites and an adjoining roof terrace.

The underground car park offers 75 spaces, supplemented by 90 additional spots and a bus parking area outside. The basement houses the heating system, building services, and additional storage rooms, along with the underground car park.
