To create a temporary art and event space on the beach of Knokke-Heist, two substantial wooden structures made from prefabricated cross laminated timber (CLT) and glued laminated timber elements were sculpturally designed to meet the program requirements of an event/art exhibition and a bar/restaurant. These pavilions, resembling abstract dunes, are positioned separately on the site, forming a square with central access. The wooden structures and art pieces interact with each other and the environment, presenting a unified whole. This design fosters a unique interaction between nature and human creation. The promenade and beach-facing facades complement each other, offering suggestive views and perspectives that enhance the site’s appeal. The courtyard unfolds as a lively square around which various activities are organised, providing unique views of the North Sea.

Location and Design

The BMW Artville was a temporary art and event space on the beach of Knokke, Belgium, created in collaboration with our partners CLT-S. Designed by G2 Architecten and constructed with Sylva™ CLT Walls, Floors and Roofs and Sylva GLT Beams and Columns by Stora Enso, it featured two large wooden structures inspired by the natural landscape, resembling abstract dunes.

Functional Spaces

These structures housed an art exhibition space, a bar, and a restaurant. The higher sections created dynamic public areas, providing the necessary height for exhibitions and optimising the available footprint. The courtyard, surrounded by low facades, maximised exposure to the summer sun and served as a central gathering space, fostering community interaction.

Sustainable and Modular Construction

The CLT and GLT elements showcased wooden surfaces and blurring the distinction between interior and exterior. Facade openings were designed for function, offering privacy or panoramic views as needed. The modular design allowed for easy dismantling and reassembly, with materials fully recyclable, making it a sustainable solution.

Visitor Experience

Large facade openings provided panoramic views of the North Sea, enhancing the visitor experience. The courtyard, surrounded by the two pavilions, served as a central gathering space. A total of 440 m³ of CLT in visible quality (VI) was used, showcasing the wood’s natural beauty while providing a robust structural framework.

Flexibility and Future Use

The Sylva kit was prefabricated and assembled on-site, allowing for efficient construction. The modular nature of the design meant the structures could be dismantled and reassembled for future events, in different configurations and allows the freedom for a new interpretation. The materials are also fully reusable, resulting in an extremely sustainable solution.
