Version of this project
The Gleinalm toll station on the A9 motorway in Styria, Austria, has undergone a comprehensive renewal after more than 40 years. The new development combines modern transport infrastructure with contemporary architecture and the targeted use of timber.
The facility was realized as ASFINAG’s first “toll station of the future.” Alongside optimized traffic flow, the project focused on advanced technology, energy efficiency, and modern design.
Sylva CLT elements by Stora Enso
Stora Enso supplied the CLT (cross-laminated timber) solutions used for the timber construction. Both the entire administration building and the roof structure above the toll lanes were built using massive timber structures. The use of prefabricated CLT elements enabled precise execution while combining functional and structural requirements with the natural qualities of wood.
Timber Construction for Transport Infrastructure
The CLT structure defines the architectural character of the new toll station, combining functional performance with the natural materiality of timber. The project demonstrates how cross-laminated timber can also be successfully applied in demanding infrastructure buildings.
From technical planning and manufacturing to installation, experienced project partners worked closely together to deliver a precisely engineered and efficiently executed timber structure for modern transport infrastructure.
