Structural Timber Awards WINNER 2023 - Project of the Year

Welcome to Dogger Bank Wind Farm - the world's largest offshore wind farm winning a slew of off-site timber construction awards.

When completed, Dogger Bank will provide electricity to over six million homes and put an impressive dent in the UK's carbon emissions.  The wind farm's operations and maintenance (O&M) building is ultra-low carbon and provides a welcoming home base for 400 workers, including crew coming on and off shifts from service operation vessels (SOVs) and onshore workers.

The base also houses their control room - for what will provide 5% of the UK’s total electricity. And warehouses spare parts for their windmills that are two and half times the height of Big Ben, and their equally enormous SOVs for transporting the windmills to the North Sea.  Who better to deliver such a small carbon footprint O&M base than B&K Structures and a Sylva™ by Stora Enso CLT kit of parts.  B&K Structures is a rapidly growing specialist timber subcontractor. The Sylva kit is an accurate, sustainable and fast-to-install, offsite construction method ideal for this state-of-the-art project with such high environmental requirements.

Together, B&K Structures and Stora Enso have demonstrated outstanding teamwork on many projects, including at Port of Tyne, making them a great fit to complete the O&M base as well.   Dogger Bank JV partners Equinor, SSE Renewables and Eni, were committed to including local trades and businesses in the development.

Mark Halliday, Dogger Bank Operations Director, said: "We are extremely proud to be working with so many local businesses to construct our operations and maintenance base. We will continue to bring more North-East expertise into the project as we move into the O&M phase so the local community can benefit from this world-leading project." Sylva kits come ready-to-build, so even local labourers who had not built with wood on this scale before were able to work on the project.

The construction project has positively impacted the region's economy with over 7.5 million UK pounds re-invested throughout the area and is already picking up a slew of awards.
