Version of this project
The iconic 1970s office complex at Montgomery Square in Woluwe-St-Pierre, in Brussels home to INAMI/RIZIV, is undergoing a remarkable transformation. The impressive renovation project is being carried out by the BeNeLux mass timber specialists CLT-S with a sustainable and renewable Sylva™ kit of parts by Stora Enso.
Bridging the gap between modernity and tradition, the renovation respects the original architecture while meeting modern technical and safety requirements. It introduces coworking spaces, outdoor workplaces, and sports facilities; all centred around a meeting pavilion in the indoor garden. This transformation not only preserves the site's unique character but also enhances its functionality and appeal.
The project focuses on preserving the existing structure while implementing circular solutions. Key materials like Sylva™ CLT Walls Floors and Roofs and blue stone, facade bricks, and facade slats are being reused, minimizing the overall carbon footprint of the building.
The Sylva kit generated only 10 tonnes of greenhouse gases (CO₂e) to manufacture and 6 tonnes of CO₂e to transport. Compared to the 147 tonnes of carbon dioxide that the trees removed while growing and will store in the building, this is a small fraction. Choosing Sylva CLT elements instead of non-renewables avoided 220 tonnes of greenhouse gases. (Stora Enso Carbon Calculator).
The green area, previously underutilized, is being completely revamped, with optimized planting that transforms the garden into the beating heart of the site. This central garden, featuring a new meeting pavilion, fosters a vibrant space, making it a source of inspiration in a densely urbanized environment.
Access to the site is thoughtfully designed, with light traffic entering through the existing entrance on Rue du Collège St Michel or a new double-height opening on Avenue de Tervueren. After security checks, visitors are welcomed into a reception pavilion with a cafeteria, inviting them to enjoy the lush green surroundings.
