This project, which serves as the provincial office for Maschinenring Salzburg, showcases prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) by Stora Enso in its construction, emphasizing both environmental sustainability and aesthetic appeal.

Architectural Vision and Design

LP architektur’s design for the Maschinenring is composed of two main structures: the office building and an adjacent warehouse.

The office building itself is a three-story structure that features a series of one and two-person offices, each designed as 20-square-meter standard units. These units extend out onto balconies through room-height window fronts, providing ample natural light and creating a seamless connection between the interior and exterior spaces.

The building has a concrete core thermal activation system. This system uses the concrete core of the building to store and release thermal energy, which is collected from a solar thermal installation on the flat roof. This innovative approach not only enhances the building’s energy efficiency but also reduces its reliance on external energy sources.

The aesthetic design of the Maschinenring office building is both modern and functional. The exterior of the building is clad in untreated, rough-sawn silver fir, which gives it a refined yet natural appearance.

Inside, the timber surfaces are sanded and oiled, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The interior design of the office spaces is equally thoughtful. Sound-absorbing loden canvases and linoleum desk surfaces, intentionally designed as a dark contrast to the light wood, enhance the working environment by reducing noise and providing a comfortable workspace.

The building’s design also fosters a sense of community among its occupants. The central courtyard, surrounded by the office units, serves as a gathering space for employees, encouraging interaction and collaboration. The ample natural light and views of the surrounding landscape further enhance the well-being of the building’s occupants.

Conclusion

The Maschinenring office building in St. Johann im Pongau is a shining example of how modern architecture can embrace sustainability without compromising on aesthetics or functionality. By using Cross Laminated Timber and other innovative materials and systems, LP architektur has created a building that is not only environmentally friendly but also a pleasure to work in.
