Version of this project
In the heart of Briñas, Spain, the iconic Palacio Tondón hotel underwent a stunning transformation in 2018. The extension added new luxury suites to the property, blending modern design with the timeless charm of La Rioja’s architectural heritage.
A Dialogue Between Centuries
The original Palacio Tondón dates back to the 16th century, a time when architecture was defined by thick stone walls and artisanal craftsmanship. In its modern extension, the project embraced a binomial harmony-preserving the historic stone structure while introducing lightweight cross-laminated timber (CLT).
This thoughtful pairing allowed the new suites to be added without overloading the existing foundation, making CLT the ideal solution for sensitive renovations. The result is a seamless blend of old and new, where the warmth of wood complements the permanence of stone, and tradition meets innovation in every detail.
Mass timber
The 1,120 m² expansion was constructed using 220 m³ of Sylva™ CLT from Stora Enso, specified in non-visible quality (NVI) to meet the project's aesthetic and structural demands. The CLT was used across floors, roofs, and walls, showcasing the versatility and efficiency of mass timber in hospitality design.
Wellness Through Wood
Beyond its structural benefits, the use of massive wood brought a welcome side effect: a naturally healthy indoor climate. Guests enjoy a warm, breathable environment that contributes to well-being-an increasingly valued feature in luxury accommodations.
Fast, Efficient Delivery
Stora Enso delivered the CLT in just four shipments, ensuring minimal disruption and maximum efficiency on-site. The streamlined logistics helped keep the project on schedule and aligned with the hotel's operational needs.
