Deep in the heart of the Paneveggio Natural Park, part of the Dolomites mountain range in northern Italy, Capanna Cervino has long been a beloved retreat for mountain enthusiasts.

Originally constructed in the 1930s, the historic lodge had become structurally unsound and energy inefficient. A recent renovation, led by Geom. Patrizio Vanzo, focused on restoring and enhancing the original timber structure while safeguarding its cultural heritage and environmental integrity.

Engineered Timber for a New Era

The reconstruction was carried out using 550 cubic meters of prefabricated Sylva™ CLT Walls, Floors, and Roofs from Stora Enso, forming the backbone of a two-story building that blends into its alpine surroundings.

This engineered timber solution enabled rapid assembly and ensured long-term durability, while maintaining the spirit of the original prefabricated wooden structure.

A refuge reimagined

The new Capanna Cervino features:

-A ground floor dedicated to dining, with two restaurant rooms and a bar.

-An upper floor offering accommodation for approximately 22 guests.

The building is designed for high energy performance, incorporating a 14 cm thermal insulation layer and triple-glazed windows. The exterior cladding, made from local larch and fir, reinforces the lodge’s connection to its natural environment.

Sustainability

Capanna Cervino has achieved A+ energy certification, underscoring its commitment to environmental responsibility.

The use of certified wood, low-VOC finishes, and sustainable construction practices reflects a deep respect for both tradition and innovation.

A Symbol of Continuity

This project represents more than a renovation—it’s a demolition and reconstruction in continuity with history. The lodge’s rebirth draws a clear line between past and future, where wood remains the soul of the architecture. The result is a structure that honors its heritage while embracing modern sustainability principles.
