Located in Madonna di Campiglio, a popular Alpine resort at 1,500 m above sea level, the Alpen Hotel Vidi underwent a major structural transformation to modernise and expand the existing facility. The project included the extension of guest rooms on the north and south façades and the complete reconstruction of the top floor.

The new structure was built entirely from cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glued laminated timber (GLT/glulam), chosen for their speed of installation and high performance in cold climates. The prefabricated timber elements allowed for rapid on-site assembly during the short construction window before the arrival of snow.

All vertical and horizontal structural elements were made of prefabricated Sylva CLT Walls, Floors and Roofs of varying thicknesses. The pitched roof and balconies were constructed in glulam-spruce for the roof, and larch for the exposed balconies, ensuring long-term resistance to weather.

On the south façade, inclined timber columns transfer loads from the balconies to the reinforced concrete core below.

A key challenge was the integration of the new timber structure with the existing masonry building.

Extensive surveys and 3D modeling ensured a precise fit and seamless transition between old and new.

The project highlights the benefits of digital design and off-site timber construction for complex Alpine renovations.
