In recent years, the Steiermarkhof in Graz has developed into a modern centre for education, dialogue and innovation. In three construction phases – from 2013 to 2024 – the existing educational complex was comprehensively renovated and expanded. The focus: sustainable architecture with high standards of functionality, quality of stay and ecological responsibility.
An exemplary educational centre
In recent years, the Steiermarkhof in Graz has developed into a modern centre for education, dialogue and innovation. In three construction phases - from 2013 to 2024 - the existing educational complex was comprehensively renovated and expanded. The focus: sustainable architecture with high standards of functionality, quality of stay and ecological responsibility.
Sylva™ kit of parts as a key structural material
A key element of the project was the use of Sylva™ CLT elements by Stora Enso. These were used as load-bearing wall and ceiling elements in both the renovation and extensions using mass timber frame construction methods.
Sylva™ CLT elements impressed not only with its structural properties and high prefabrication quality, but also with its CO₂ storage capacity and contribution to a pleasant indoor climate.
The Sylva kit generated 29 tonnes of greenhouse gases (CO₂e) to manufacture. Compared to the 416 tonnes of carbon dioxide that the trees removed while growing and will store in the building, this amount is a small fraction. Architecture with identity
The architectural concept places particular emphasis on lighting, transparency and regionality. In the most recent expansion phase, hotel rooms were redesigned - named after Styrian tourist regions - and furnished in characteristic colour schemes. The agricultural office centre also built with a CLT structure in 2017, provides space for organisations such as the Styrian Rural Youth Association and the organic association 'Ernte für das Leben'.
Sustainability in the system
In addition to the consistent use of wood, other sustainability aspects were also taken into account: energy-efficient building services, regional building materials, a well-thought-out mobility concept and a kitchen with a focus on regional products round off the project.
In summary
The Steiermarkhof is an example of forward-looking educational architecture, in which Sylva™ CLT elements Stora Enso contributed significantly to the success of the project as a structural and ecological building block. The project shows how low-carbon construction materials, functionality and aesthetic quality can be combined in timber construction - setting an example far beyond the region.
