The new Slottsskogens Sporthall in Gothenburg is a multi-sports arena comprising approximately 6,750 m² across five floors. Designed for handball, athletics, gymnastics and trampoline sports, the facility will also serve as a public meeting place for clubs, schools and visitors.

As one of the region’s most visible sports developments, the building combines demanding functional requirements with a strong architectural focus on timber construction and exposed wood surfaces. The project is being delivered by AF Bygg Väst on behalf of the City of Gothenburg’s Sports and Associations Administration (IOFF), with Stora Enso supplying prefabricated timber elements for the structural solution.

The structure combines a concrete base with glulam and CLT structural systems. Prefabricated Sylva CLT Walls, Floors and Roofs, together with Sylva CLT Stairs, supplied by Stora Enso, form a key part of the structural solution.

Close coordination for delivery is key

The high degree of prefabrication contributes to efficient installation and precision on site. The delivery has required close coordination between Stora Enso, AF Bygg Väst and other project partners, with a focus on coordinated execution and quality throughout the construction process.

Exposed timber surfaces define the interior spaces and create a warm, durable environment. The timber structure also enables large and flexible spans — an important advantage in sports hall design.

The facility includes a full-size sports hall with seating for 150 spectators, alongside dedicated training areas for athletics and gymnastics. At the centre of the building, a generous entrance hall creates a natural gathering point for visitors and sports associations.

A reference project in the public building sector

Slottsskogens Sporthall is an important reference for modern timber construction within Gothenburg’s public building sector and is planned to be completed in 2027. The collaboration with AF Bygg Väst and the use of prefabricated CLT solutions make the development a strong example of contemporary sports hall construction in the region.
