Version of this project
As part of the “Baths Strategy 2030,” several swimming facilities from the 1980s in Vienna are being renovated and expanded — including the swimming pool complex in Großfeldsiedlung in the 21st district.
The aim was to develop a prototype concept based on construction principles that can serve as a model for future refurbishments. The new building blends harmoniously into the existing ensemble and demonstrates how modern mass timber architecture can combine functionality, and architectural quality.
Timber Architecture with Character
Even from the outside, the building makes a strong statement: a façade of vertical wooden elements, a climbing framework, and a cantilevered mass timber roof define its appearance. Two bridges connect the existing structure with the new extension, creating a seamless link between old and new and guiding visitors directly into the new foyer.
Natural, Bright, and Open
The centrepiece of the project is the new training pool hall. With a height of nearly six metres and floor-to-ceiling glazing, the space feels bright and expansive. Mature trees outside remain visible, reinforcing the connection to nature.
The mass timber structure consists of glue-laminated columns, long-span beams, and a cross-laminated timber (CLT) roof construction with Sylva™ by Stora Enso. This combination not only provides stability but also creates a warm and pleasant atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the element of water.
A Building for the Future
The new combined swimming facility impressively demonstrates how mass timber construction can set new standards in public architecture. Its clear structure, well-considered spatial concept, and sustainable choice of materials make the project a forward-looking example of modern design.
