As part of the City of Vienna’s investment in the expansion of modern and sustainable sports facilities, the new Sport & Fun Hall was built in Vienna-Leopoldstadt – a flagship project for sustainable mass timber construction in urban settings.

With its façade made of untreated larch wood that is covered with greenery, the building blends harmoniously into the surrounding park. A continuous band of polycarbonate panels provides natural, glare-free daylight and gives the hall a sense of lightness and transparency.

Timber construction with CLT from Stora Enso

The walls, ceilings and load-bearing structure are all made of spruce, and Sylva™ CLT elements were used for the ceiling. The slender trussed rafters which were joined in two parts for transport reasons, span the hall, creating an impressive spatial openness.

Inside, the sports hall reveals itself as an open, bright timber structure – functional, robust, and aesthetically pleasing. The adjoining auxiliary block was built using reinforced concrete with a hybrid construction method and complements the load-bearing structure.

Energy-efficient

The Sport & Fun Hall was built according to modern energy standards. A photovoltaic system with around 100 solar panels generates up to 45,000 kWh of electricity annually – enough energy for about 15 households. The green roof and façades improve the microclimate and provide natural cooling.

By reducing impervious surfaces and greening the entire surroundings, additional green space was created, contributing to a sustainable and healthy urban climate.

Mass timber construction – lightweight, efficient, sustainable

The project is a striking example of how mass timber construction and sustainable urban development can be combined. Vienna-Leopoldstadt’s Sport & Fun Hall is a showcase of modern timber construction in public buildings that exemplifies clear architectural structure, visible wood surfaces, and thoughtful material selection.
