Version of this project
Fife College’s new Dunfermline Campus is Scotland’s first net zero carbon tertiary education building. Part of the Dunfermline Learning Campus, this campus will relocate Fife College’s Dunfermline Campus, St Columba’s RC High School, and Woodmill High School to a shared site at Duloch on the eastern edge of Dunfermline.
The scheme aims to streamline the educational pathway from school through to further higher education with state-of-the-art facilities to meet the learning and training needs of businesses and the wider community, with long-lasting social and economic opportunities in Fife.
Designed with learners in mind, every aspect of the building enhances the student experience and provides top-notch facilities for their courses.
Design
This project covers an area of 20,000 m² over four floors and was delivered by our partners, B&K Hybrid Solutions.
The campus features a shared central atrium that connects various departments, promoting the sharing of ideas and facilities. The third-floor learning resource centre and adjacent teaching areas encourage interaction and collaborative learning among students, staff, and visitors.
Sustainable
The designs for Fife College set a new standard in sustainable architecture, targeting the embodied energy and carbon of the building fabric, and ensuring energy efficiency in use. With additional funding from the Scottish Government, the project goes beyond net zero targets, and aims to continually reduce operational carbon post-completion.
The Sylva™ CLT elements generated 100 tonnes of greenhouse gases (CO₂e) to manufacture. Compared to the 1,455 tonnes of carbon dioxide that the trees removed while they were growing and will store in the building, this is a small fraction. Choosing Sylva CLT elements instead of non-renewables avoided 2,182 tonnes of greenhouse gases. (Source: Stora Enso Carbon Calculator).
Award
The project was awarded the Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award in 2023. This award highlights the project's positive environmental, workforce, and community-focused benefits.
