Are you interested in biobased construction that is quick and easy to install but can also be fully dismantled and reused at different locations? If so, read more about Joliot-Curie's temporary modular school.
Bouygues Construction and Technologie Habitat (TH) Habitat, in conjunction with Atelier B2A, developed this highly innovative modular concept to provide a temporary, functional school while Joliot-Curie School is renovated.
The temporary school is designed so it can be installed in a matter of days and fully dismantled and reassembled at a different location when it is no longer needed.
The concept is the result of close collaboration between construction and engineering teams with expertise with sustainable mass timber (WeWood) at Bouygues Bâtiment Ile-de-France. Together, they devised modular classrooms made almost entirely from bio-sourced materials.
It was built off-site at TH's plant in eastern France using Sylva™ CLT Walls, Floors, and Roofs by Stora Enso. The 126 teaching modules will provide the structure for the learning environment divided into 22 classes. Unlike many temporary structures like porta cabins these modules are of a beautiful high quality using solid wood known to be beneficial for learning environments.
It took 28 weeks to develop and manufacture off-site but just 28 days to install. The overall architectural design is both modest and contemporary, with the facades designed to conceal the modularity of the structure.
It is targeted to meet the certification for the 2031 threshold under RE2020 regulations, with level 3 for bio-sourced construction exceeded and a reusability rate of over 80%.
The first timber modules will be installed in Bagneux over the summer of 2024, with the school scheduled to open in April 2025.
