Version of this project
Horley's mass timber leisure centre boasts pools, a gym, sports hall, and a very low carbon footprint
The Horley Leisure Centre, developed by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, is a state-of-the-art facility featuring a 25-meter swimming pool, a learner pool, a sports hall, a gym, and changing facilities. A key highlight of the construction is the use of 415 cubic meters of Sylva™ CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) for the floors, roofs, and walls, supplied by Eurban, a partner of Stora Enso.
The project team included S & P Architects, who led the architectural vision for the Horley Leisure Centre. Renowned for their innovative and sustainable designs, S & P Architects have received numerous accolades, including being listed in the prestigious AJ100, which recognizes the largest and most successful architectural practices in the UK.
This recognition reflects their commitment to excellence and their ability to deliver high-quality projects that balance aesthetic appeal with functionality. The structural engineering was handled by Furness Partnership, while Pellikaan served as the main contractor. Eurban, the specialist timber subcontractor, played a crucial role in the construction process.
Awards
The Green Apple Awards for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage are designed to recognise projects across the UK that "demonstrate environmental endeavour".
Reigate and Banstead Borough Council's Adam De Save said: "We made a real effort to ensure that the centre was not only environmentally friendly in its operation but also in its design and construction."
