"Lidl - a sustainable store concept

The Lidl store chain, together with LINK arkitektur, has developed a new store concept with a very high sustainability profile in Sigtuna city. The first store is planned in Sigtuna city and the building will be environmentally certified according to the requirements for BREEAM Excellent.

After winning a land allocation competition in 2017, Lidl is establishing its store according to a concept that meets the district's strict environmental and sustainability requirements. The high sustainability goals mean, among other things, that the construction will not affect the site's species richness. This is done with the help of eco-zones around the building and plantings are built on the roofs. Solar cells are placed on the south sides of the roofs to a sufficient extent to be able to save energy according to BREEAM Excellent. Outside the store, visitors will be able to charge their electric bikes and electric cars.

The environmental requirements have contributed to strengthening the architectural expression. The shape of the roof is adapted for maximized sun position and the load-bearing wooden construction with large beams and pillars contributes to a visually strong environmental profile. To break down the building's volume into a small - scale urban character, it has been divided into several smaller bodies. Gable sides with gable roof form a broken façade with a collecting pleated roof. The house opens up to the adjacent square with the help of glazing in the facade and an increased roof overhang. Recycled brick is used for those parts of the facade facing the street that are not glazed.

The basis for the store concept is a traditional market hall where several businesses are housed under one roof. As a complement to Lidl's own store part, e.g. a delicatessen with a market hall character and serving to be accommodated. The proposed building has space and generous light, which together with carefully selected natural materials creates an attractive trading environment." - Link arkitektur
