Version of this project
In 2019, the Gymnastikhall in Uppsala underwent a floor extension using Sylva™ CLT elements by Stora Enso. The project spans 419 m² across two storeys, and features 62 m³ of non-visible quality CLT, delivered in just two shipments.
The extension was designed by Bjerking, a multidisciplinary Swedish firm known for integrating sustainability and functionality into civic architecture. Their approach emphasized material efficiency and indoor climate performance, aligning with the municipality's goals for healthy, low-impact public buildings.
TK Botnia, now part of Tyréns, brought advanced timber engineering expertise to the project. With a portfolio that includes landmark timber structures. TK Botnia applied precision detailing and prefabrication strategies to optimize the CLT system's performance and speed of installation.
Fastec, a leading Swedish contractor for sports and civic buildings, managed the turnkey delivery. Their experience in modular and timber-based construction ensured smooth coordination between trades, particularly with Dala Massivträ, the specialist timber subcontractor responsible for on-site assembly.
This project exemplifies how mass timber can be seamlessly integrated into existing public infrastructure, offering rapid construction, improved air quality, and reduced carbon impact-all within a dense urban context.
