Version of this project
Geschwornergården, located in the World Heritage Site Falun Mine, has transformed from a 1700s residence to a popular restaurant. Our new building proposal enhances accessibility and connects the mining museum with Geschworner Farm, featuring sustainable CLT wood construction and a welcoming patio.
Geschwornergården in Falun is located in the middle of the World Heritage Site Falun Mine at the mine site adjacent to Stora stöten.
The building, which dates back to the 1700s, has over the years been a residence, office at Falun Mine and more recently a popular restaurant. The existing kitchen was condemned and the reception of goods and accessibility needed to be improved. Our proposal was a new building that connects the mining museum and its conference facility with the Geschworner Farm.
The building houses a kitchen, goods reception and serving area which, together with the existing building, can offer over 200 seats, and it opens onto the existing courtyard with a generous patio under a cantilevered roof that offers both sun and shade in the summer.
The construction is made of solid wood (100 tonnes of CLT wood from Stora Enso's factory in Austria) where the CLT wood comes from sustainable forestry and is certified according to PEFC.
By using solid wood, the project was able to achieve a lightweight building with a short construction time, a high degree of prefabrication, carbon neutrality and a warm and cosy environment. The exterior parts are painted with Falun red paint from Falun. The restaurant opened in January 2017. Due to architectural site and weak soil conditions, the building was made with a ventilated crawl-space foundation. The installation of ventilation was done in parallel with the frame.
Geschwornergården was nominated for design-s, Swedish Design Awards 2018.
