Since 2020, Arnoldstein railway station has undergone extensive modernization and has been transformed into a contemporary mobility hub. In addition to the refurbishment of the historic existing buildings, several new structures were realized in mass timber construction, demonstrating the potential of timber engineering in infrastructure projects.

The centerpiece of the project is the new electronic signal box building, which was constructed entirely in mass timber. The structure meets the highest safety-related requirements and was incorporated into the official ÖBB regulations at the end of 2023. This marks the first time that timber has been recognized as a standard construction method for railway infrastructure.

Additional buildings, including the waiting area and sanitary facilities, were also built using timber construction methods. Prefabricated mass timber elements enabled efficient installation and short construction times.

Transparent-coated Sylva CLT walls by Stora Enso, combined with larch façades, create a durable, robust, and natural architectural appearance.

In total, around 150 cubic meters of regional timber were used, making the project a successful example of modern engineered timber construction in public infrastructure.
