Version of this project
Madergia and Diaz Garcia Construction make building in a tight infill look effortless with their ingenious application of modern, sustainable cross-laminated timber (CLT).
With Architecht's Óscar Mongay (OM ARQ) design, they have entirely transformed any notions you ever had of social housing into seven sustainable sanctuaries in the heart of Pamplona.
The location was particularly challenging to access on a narrow, medieval, busy street. Specifying a building material that could be fast to install, lightweight to assemble with a small crane, and kept construction noise/traffic to a minimum was critical.
The project had to meet international Passive House standards and be nearly zero energy in construction and long-term operations - a requirement by the developers, Pamplona Centro Histórico, who, like most municipalities, are dogged about ensuring their once-in-a-generation developments are healthy and sustainable. Sylva™ by Stora Enso offsite-manufactured kit of parts ticked all of those boxes and delivered impressive results.
The 100% PEFC-exposed wood homes range from 41 to 89 m². The ground floor is a commercial premises and shares access to the vertical central core (elevator and stairs), providing air-tight, low-cost to maintain social housing for many years.
