Version of this project
Situated in the scenic Alpine village of Lundo, Italy, offering sweeping views of the Giudicarie Valley and the Brenta mountains in Northern Italy. The design merges contemporary architecture with traditional building methods, creating a structure that harmonises with its natural surroundings
Designed for two families, the house includes shared living areas and a spacious zone dedicated to yoga and meditation. A central staircase, illuminated by a skylight, anchors the layout. The bioclimatic orientation ensures optimal solar gain in winter and effective shading in summer.
Mass timber structure
The building features cross-laminated timber, specifically prefabricated Sylva CLT Walls, Floors, and Roofs, by Stora Enso providing a robust and low-carbon footprint structural solution.
The flat roof is constructed using glued laminated timber (GLT/glulam) beams and insulated with mineral wool. A cantilevered balcony and ground-level walkway are built from suspended larch boards on the timber substructure.
Detailing & materials
At ground level, a multipurpose porch is supported by V-shaped wooden columns mounted on steel bases, protecting the timber from water exposure.
Exterior walls rest on a concrete curb and are clad in evaporated larch, selected for its ability to age naturally and blend into the Alpine landscape.
Energy performance
The railing system uses steel cables within a larch grid, echoing traditional hayloft screens with a modern twist. Thanks to its high-performance envelope, natural materials, and bioclimatic design, Sun House achieves energy class A, exemplifying a balance of tradition, sustainability, and comfort.
