Casa ad un Piano (Single Story House) is a single-story residence designed to fulfil three essential client goals: formal simplicity, energy efficiency, and the use of natural materials. The house is located in a residential redevelopment area on land formerly occupied by a brickworks, offering a unique opportunity to integrate sustainable architecture into a historically industrial site.

The home's rectangular floor plan is developed entirely on one level and draws inspiration from traditional Venetian rural architecture. Its asymmetric gabled roofs and clean, elegant composition reflect a modern interpretation of local heritage.

The design emphasises spatial optimisation and a harmonious relationship with the surrounding landscape. At the heart of the house is the living area, which opens generously to the garden through a large, glazed façade, creating a seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces.

Structural mass timber system

The building's load-bearing structure is constructed using Sylva™ prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) elements by Stora Enso. This system enabled precise planning, predictable costs, and reliable construction timelines.

Interior and materiality

Inside, the atmosphere is defined by exposed wooden structures that lend warmth and character to the space. A custom-designed furniture element separates the living and sleeping areas, replacing traditional partition walls with a functional and aesthetic solution. The material palette includes fir wood for structure and finishes, cork for insulation, and rammed earth for interior walls.

Performance and sustainability

Natural light floods every room, enhancing occupant well-being and reducing energy consumption. The Sylva system's prefabrication and material efficiency contribute to lower carbon footprint and operational costs.
