The unique design of this building has led to the creation of numerous intriguing structural details. The basement and first floors, constructed from Cross-Laminated Timber (Sylva™ CLT Walls and Floors), occupy less than half the built-up area compared to the attic floor, which features a gable roof.

Utilising Sylva™ CLT elements, it was possible to achieve 1.5-meter overhangs over the first-floor perimeter wall without the need for additional formwork for the ceiling structure.

The terrace includes a cantilever extending up to 2.6 meters, showcasing the capability of Sylva CLT to create significant overhangs and provide external coverage on the terrace.

The building is situated on a steep slope, where traditional formwork would be challenging. However, the use of prefabricated kit of parts simplified construction and enhances structural integrity was made possible.

Additionally, high strength (HS) portal frames with a width of 7.2 meters is incorporated into the design.

The exterior is clad in larch, with the roof also featuring larch covering and split larch shingles, adding to the aesthetic appeal and natural integration of the structure.

Sustainability

The Sylva kit only generated two tonnes of greenhouse gases (CO₂e) to manufacture and less than one tonne of CO₂e to transport from the mill.

Compared to the 36 tonnes of carbon dioxide that the trees removed while growing and will store in the building, this is a small fraction. Choosing Sylva CLT elements instead of non-renewables avoided 54 tonnes of greenhouse gases. (Source: Stora Enso Carbon Calculator.
