Version of this project
A bathing hut on an allotment beside the Danube has been transformed into a whimsical new home by Wiener Backraum Architekten in collaboration with our partners, ZMP.
The project faced significant challenges due to the limited land space available for construction—only 80 square meters of usable space—and a strict height restriction of 7.5 meters. Additionally, the delivery of materials was constrained by limited access, and the high-water mark of the Danube that posed further architectural hurdles.
Despite these obstacles, the team devised a creative solution using a Sylva™ kit of parts by Stora Enso. The extension was constructed with Sylva CLT Walls and Floors forming the structural frame. This was supplemented by a reinforced concrete base to mitigate the risk of flooding.
Architect Andreas Etzelstorfer explained, “Wood made sense here because slender wall structures can only be made of wood. This is another way to gain space because every centimetre in the interior was highly valuable.” The use of wood allowed for the maximization of interior space, which was crucial given the limited area available. (Learn more about tight tolerances with CLT).
The building is adorned with maritime details reminiscent of a yacht, including portholes, terraces, and balconies, transforming it into a unique and imaginative structure. The sight of this Badehaus immediately evokes a holiday atmosphere, inviting visitors to relax and enjoy the serene surroundings.
Inside, the Badehaus emphasizes comfort and functionality. The use of Sylva CLT for the walls and floors creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, while the open-plan layout maximizes the use of space. The natural wood finish adds a touch of rustic charm, complementing the modern design elements.
The property was developed using PEFC-certified wood from sustainably managed forests, manufactured in Ybbs to produce ready-to-install components.
Cross-laminated timber is a renewable building material that offers numerous benefits, including strength, durability, and the crucial advantage of being a renewable resource.
The Badehaus has not only captured the hearts of visitors but has also garnered recognition in the architectural community.
